Album Marketing- Adverts
To promote an album a lot of artists use posters and adverts in magazines. There is also merchandise, promotional recordings and videos which enhance the hype of an album before its release. Promoting albums is a good way of marketing.

The Libertines

For this advert the bands two main members are featured with an image of them as the main background and the advertisements in front. The image used is the same as the one on their digipak album cover. This is as the advert is too promote their album. The image shows the members at what appears to be a party/gig and reflects their indie style. The eye contact used in the image connects them with the consumer and is a way of marketing. The bright red contrasts with the bands name 'The Libertines' which is shown in newspaper print and highlighted with black and white. It stands out and draws a reader to recognize the bands name. The advert also includes track listings, 'Can't Stand Me Now'. This promotes their album to the reader. Also the advertisement shows where you can purchase the album, 'Woolworths'. The simplicity of the advert and lack of text empathises their passion for music and not presentation.

2pac- Trapped

This advert for 2PAC's album shows the album cover art, release date and record label name. '2PAC' is printed in large letters across the advert to clearly show it is his album. The image is in black and white and stands out with an image of a child behind bars, to portray this better above it says 'trapped'- the albums name. The image of the girl creates a 'trapped' sense which fits with the album name and also relates to 2pacs' struggle in his career. The release date promotes the album and lets the reader know more details. The way the background image is contrasted with the foreground makes the artists' name, '2pac' stand out with the black highlighting the white font. The record name label is shown as this is 2pacs debut album and it gives him a platform to be noticed by. The advert is memorable with its strong imagery and the use of black and white composition.

Noah and The Whale- The First Days Of Spring

This advert shows a relaxed and casual approach to the bands album. I think this reflects their laid back music style and is portrayed well with the pastel colours and the image of them all blurred in a windy atmosphere. The natural photography shows the first days of spring which is coincidently the name of the album. The lead singer is captured in the foreground whereas the other band members are blurred into the background, he is holding a telescope which represents seeing and clarity. This again relates to the start of spring in which there is natural change in nature etc. There is a variety of different fonts used in the advert in which different information is written, for example reviews and release dates. This gives the advert a quirky edge which relates to an indie audience. The iconography used establishes the band in the advert through what they are wearing. The fitted shirts and long curly hair is an element often associated with indie bands and reflects their style and genre. The composition of the advert makes it fit the target audience of both male and females as it is simple.

Bombay Bicycle Club- I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose

This advert sticks to the same conventions as Bombay Bicycle Clubs' album cover as the same image, colours, style of font/logo is used. The use of the black and whit background image reflects the bands indie style. On the advert a release date and featuring songs are named which shows the audience what to expect when buying. Their website is shown and their record label to represent independent music labels. The light blue colour on their band name logo reflects their relaxed style of music and also lets fans easily recognize them on the advert. The people in the background reflect the indie demographic as their style of clothing is stereotypically indie, the choice of location also shows the park which is a laid back atmosphere which the indie music audience may go too. The target audience is both female and male and this is shown through the composition as it easily fits both genders tastes.

  1. This is some good work Kate. Analysis is short but to the point and takes in most of the major elements of the advert. I think you might need another modern, British, indie poster thought. I think the 2Pac posters maybe confirms the broad conventions of an album advert but it is not specific to your genre. A third, specific poster would cement your understanding.
